The quarterly board meeting of the Alabama State Council on the Arts was held in Valley, Thursday and Friday, September 6-7. Members of the council serve six-year terms and are appointed by the governor. The board members held business meetings at the Valley Community Center on Thursday and Friday.

On Thursday evening, the Valley Arts Council hosted a reception for the Alabama State Council on the Arts board members inside Warehouse No. 3 at Langdale Mill. The warehouse was full of exhibits of art created by the Valley Arts Council members and included art pieces from abstract to wooden sculptures.

The reception was also in celebration of the 10th year anniversary of the Valley Arts Council. Suzie Britt was presented a plaque for serving as the Valley Arts Council president for the past 10 years. Other awards were presented to Cheryl Morgan of Auburn University’s Urban Design Studio and in memory of the late Dr. Frank Setzer for their work with the City of Valley through the Design Alabama program that produced the Design Valley planning document.

Chuck Moore, creator of Rusty the Iron Man and his family, displayed “Hawk”, a recently completed sculpture. Mr. Moore started the piece in early July and completed it 2 weeks ago. From a timber of original growth longleaf pine that was in the 1894 portion of Lanett Mill, Mr. Moore has created a beautifully carved image of a hawk. His goal is to make longleaf pine sculptures from each local mill being torn down.
